INTRODUCTION

In October 2004, Graduate School of Science at Tohoku University started “International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS)”, the first international graduate program founded in Japanese national universities. IGPAS is conducted in English for international students who are eager to obtain Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

Based on promoted research programs especially led by COE programs awarded to departments of Gradate School of Science, a large number of scholars will be exchanged through international collaboration and world-wide field works. Prospective students will have excellent opportunities to study modern science and conduct cutting-edge research.

IGPAS 2008 will be renewed in various aspects. In particular, the Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship will be granted for 8 qualified international students who will enter the Master’s course. In addition, IGPAS-super doctor course begins in 2008 in the doctoral (PhD) program, and 2 distinguished international students will be recruited into this course.

PROGRAM DETAILS

IGPAS is basically a 5-year graduate program consisted of 1-2 year Master’s program followed by 2-3 year Doctoral program. It covers three specific areas:
1) Chemistry and Biochemistry Program, 2) Multi-scale Natural Science Program, and 3) Earth and Planetary Science Program. They are designed to allow IGPAS students to learn from a variety of fields within science rather than to specialize in a specific field of study. It is also the aim of this program to educate Japanese students to exert their abilities internationally as professional scientists.

IGPAS-Super Doctoral Course (SDC)
This is a new program starting from October 2008. IGPAS-SDC is a special doctoral course in cooperation with the Institute for the International Advanced Research and Education (IIARE), Tohoku University. Only two students will be selected to IGPAS-SDC. It is differentiated from general doctoral course of IGPAS in regard to benefits from IIARE such as scholarship, subsidy for research, and interdisciplinary educational programs.
Application for IGPAS-SDC requires documents both from applicants and their prospective supervisors, and application with missing documents will not be accepted. For more information, download the booklet above.
